F.A.Q

WHAT:

Volunteers will conduct a comprehensive survey of sheltered and unsheltered homeless as well as conduct a street count of homeless persons living in the Tarrant County area.

Agencies that provide Transitional, Permanent and Shelter Plus Care housing for the homeless will conduct the survey to a random sample of their residents January 22-24.

WHO:

Over 500 Volunteers will assist the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition in cooperation with Tarrant County and the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington.

WHERE:

Volunteers will gather at one of three staging areas within Tarrant County, including central Fort Worth, central Arlington, and HEB and conduct surveys and street count throughout the entire Tarrant County area.

WHEN:

Thursday, January 25, 2007. Staging area and pre-count training will begin at 9:00 p.m. and count teams will deploy by 10:00 pm.

**Surveying at Emergency Shelters will begin when intake closes and may require volunteers to begin surveying earlier than 10:00 pm.

WHY:

In order to address the growing and changing needs of the homeless, it is important to understand
the extent of homelessness in our community and the nature of their needs. This is the second
annual street count conducted by the TCHC. The results of the street count and survey will:

  • Assist the leaders of the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition, the Fort Worth Mayor's Advisory Commission on Homelessness, local governments, foundations, agencies, and churches in identifying the needs, composition, challenges and barriers facing the homeless in our communities.

  • Increase public awareness of the needs of the homeless and gain support for solutions to end homelessness;

  • Measure the changes in the numbers and scope of homelessness in Tarrant County as compared to previous surveys and population estimates; and,

  • Satisfy regulatory requirements for receiving Continuum of Care Supportive Housing Program Funds from HUD.
